It was the day of Jillian and Martin’s wedding. Having arrived early at the church, Martin sat down at the front listening to the music, and Tom, who was his best man, sat silently beside him. Martin looked at his watch. It was three minutes to one. Jillian would be arriving, he told himself, very soon. And then the thought came back into his mind that he had forgotten something. What could it be? He might have forgotten to get the money to give Tom for the taxis. But no, he could feel it in the inside pocket of the suit he had hired for the wedding. He wondered if he had got his passport ready at home. He might have forgotten to put it with everything else he needed for the honeymoon. But no, he knew he had done that. It wasn’t his passport he had forgotten.

At that moment, the Wedding March rang through the church and Jillian and her father, who had arrived by taxi at the church door, began to walk slowly towards Martin. Having arrived at his side, she gave him a quick look and a secret smile, and then turned to listen to the vicar, who was starting to speak.

“She ought to wear white more often,” Martin thought. “I wonder what she’s thinking now. She might be wondering if she’s doing the right thing. Oh, what is it that I’ve forgotten?” he began to wonder if he had given the ring to tom, who was standing just behind him. He might have left the ring in his other suit in the taxi. Then suddenly he realized that the vicar was speaking to him.

“Will you, Martin, have this woman to be your wedded wife?”

“I will,” he answered faintly, and all the thoughts disappeared from his mind.

Ten minutes later he stood with Jillian, smiling patiently, outside the church door, while the photographer pushed their parents into a group beside him. “I may not have packed my camera,” he thought, “or they might not sell my particular films in Paris.”

“Stop worrying,” Jillian told him in the taxi, which was taking them to the wedding reception. “But I feel sure I’ve forgotten something,” he said? “I think I might have lost the plane tickets. Or I might not have got enough for the honeymoon. Or something.”

Soon they were at the local hotel and all their friends and relations, having followed them from the church in cars and taxis, started to shake hands and say “congratulations” and everybody wanted to kiss the bride. The wedding reception began, but all the time Martin was still wondering if he had forgotten anything. “I may not have packed those new orange pyjamas I bought. I may not have written down the address of the hotel we’re staying at.”

Having left their friends still drinking wine and eating wedding cake at the reception, Jillian and Martin went to change their clothes, and get ready for going away. Still martin couldn’t think of anything he had forgotten. Their passports and tickets were with his own suit, where he had put them. His camera and new orange pyjamas were in his case, where he had packed them. The address of their Paris hotel was in his wallet, which he had put in the inside pocket of his own suit.

Soon they were at the airport. They were sitting close together, waiting for their plane, when martin suddenly remembered. “I know what I haven’t done, darling,” he shouted and rushed to the nearest telephone box. He was back at Jillian’s side a moment later, smiling. “I had forgotten to ask Tom to take that wedding suit back to the shop I hired it from,” he said.

“Well,” Jillian answered. “I’m glad you’ve remembered. Now you might start thinking about us and stop wondering what you’ve forgotten. “

Half an hour later, their plane was high in the air. Suddenly Martin let go of Jillian’s hand, having remembered that he hadn’t told Tom about the taxi money he had left in the pocket of his wedding suit. Tom wouldn’t think to look in the pockets before he took the suit back. Martin sighed.

“What’s the matter, darling?” Jillian asked.

“Nothing, darling,” he answered. “I’m just looking forward to married life with you.”
